In the early 2000s, Dr. Rieber realized there was a need for more surgical joint replacement treatments at Saint Barnabas as he observed patients struggling to recover from broken hips. After working hand-in-hand with the hospital as decision makers, in 2008 he founded the Joint Institute of Saint Barnabas. As the director, Dr. Rieber developed an institute that improves the total joint replacement patients overall experience in the hospital, from pre-operative planning and better nurse-patient ratios to a customized recovery experience.
Another patient-focused solution Dr. Rieber volunteered to implement was getting buy-in from the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Department at Saint Barnabas to use
the breakthrough anesthetic drug Exparel during knee surgeries. The pain medication numbs the area where it was administered for up to three days, providing more comfort to the patient post-surgery. Patients of Dr. Rieber claimed that their life had improved only a week after surgery because of greater mobility.
